A little incentive to be green (greencentive?)

Pork producers have a lot to be proud of when it comes to sustainable production practices – says Ashley McDonald, Vice President of Sustainability for the National Pork Board (NPB). Now it’s time to quantify it through some grants…

  • The NPB is tied to three grants totaling $155 million in USDA Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities funding. They are part of the $2.8 billion awarded to 70 selected projects in the first round of funding for the program.

🔍 In short…

The aim of these grants is similar in nature: trying to put climate-smart practices on the ground, providing the technical assistance for producers to do so, and empowering them with data from their operations by identifying the usefulness of these practices on their farms.

  • This is a great opportunity for the US pork industry: better practices can be implemented in a more cost-effective way, thus improving the country’s sustainability footprint. Ultimately, that's going to help products both in the domestic and in the international markets.
