An unwanted visitor 😤
Jan 13, 2023It’s never easy when we are visited by an acquaintance we don’t like and haven’t seen in a long time, is it? Well, this visitor makes any unwanted guest look a bit better in comparison… Brazil registered an Aujeszky’s Disease case in December 2022 in the south of the county, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul – the third largest producer of the country. The virus had been dormant for almost 2 decades there.
• In 2003, a large outbreak caused the euthanization of 27,000 pigs.
• This time, health authorities slaughtered 46 animals, are monitoring 200 other farms in the region, and collected more than 500 samples from pigs in the far west of the state.
🦠 While the disease affects the central nervous, respiratory, and reproductive systems of pigs and can lead to their death, fortunately there is no risk for either farmers in direct contact with the infected animals or consumers – the virus is not transmissible to humans. Read more about it here.
