Green and yellow competition? ๐ง๐ท
Nov 29, 2022๐ท As part of an effort to attract more meat suppliers to the Mexican market, the government of Mexico is allowing limited access for Brazilian pork. And by limited, we mean that the Brazilian products must come from the state of Santa Catarina, specifically – a state free of foot and mouth disease (FMD) and where the plants approved for export are located.
• The imported goods must go directly into further processing upon arrival.
๐ If we said that was a surprise, we’d be lying… Mexico has allowed Brazilian poultry for a few years now, and it was only a matter of time before pork was included too.
๐ Afraid of the competition? Well, the US obviously has tremendous advantages given our proximity, long history in the market, and especially our ability to ship chilled pork. That’s why we currently hold about 86% of the market for imported pork in Mexico, so it’s unlikely that Brazil will be a challenge in the chilled category.
• However… It might get interesting on the frozen side. The frozen pork category is where Brazil will have some opportunity to capture a share of the market.
