Jack of all trades ๐
Jun 26, 2023๐ค Or should we say "alternative of many uses?". That medium chain functional lipids (MCM) are an alternative to antibiotics has been known for quite some time! But did you know that their antimicrobial mode of action is believed to fall into three general categories? They are: increased cell permeability, inhibition of enzymes and nutrient uptake, and the disruption of the electron transport chain.
- MCM are particularly effective in disrupting cell membranes, thus impairing receptors and enzymes needed to import key nutrients to pathogens. Oh! These same effects on bacterial cell walls are also observed in lipid enveloped viruses, like PRRSv, PEDv and ASFv!
๐ MCM can also make the environment less favorable to pathogens along with promoting the growth of good bacteria. To better understand how MCM have multiple modes of action, read what Berg + Schmidt has to say – here.
