Mode of action โ
Mar 31, 2023๐ค That medium chain functional lipids are effective, economical, and multifaceted feed additives has already been established. But did you know there are three of them, each with a unique structure and activity, and that their mode of action is believed to fall into three general categories?
• The medium chain functional lipids are MCFA, MCM, and MCT;
• Their modes of action are increased cell permeability, the inhibition of enzymes and nutrient uptake, and the disruption of the electron transport chain.
๐ฆ A better understanding of the modes of action results in better feed application. For example, supplementing the diet of sows and milk replacers with medium chain functional lipids rich in lauric acid (C12:0 or GML) may ultimately result in fewer pathogens and greater populations of good bacteria.
• Oh! Let’s not forget that the effects observed on bacterial cell walls are also observed in lipid enveloped viruses – namely PRRSv, PEDv, ASFv, etc.
