Coordination and cooperation among Canadian and US veterinary authorities are key to protecting North America from foreign animal disease (FAD), says the Veterinary Counselor for the Canadian Pork Council, Dr. Egan Brockhoff.

  • Both veterinary authorities are well respected, organized, and science based.

With diseases like foot and mouth disease (FMD) and African swine fever (ASF) circulating around the globe, there’s always room – and a need – to streamline and optimize efforts to keep the viruses out.

  • The introduction of new technologies, the training of professionals in the field, measures for health risk mitigations, and restrictions for the control of imports, are the way to protect the herds – and the country.

Dr. Brockhoff says the idea is to continue and facilitate the free movement of livestock between Canada and the US as an economic driver for both countries, but to do so while safeguarding against the movement of diseases.
