Pigs and humans have to keep their eyes open ๐ท
Aug 23, 2022The CDC has reported another human infection with an influenza (flu) virus that usually spreads only in pigs. Four such infections have been registered in the U.S. so far in 2022.
- This usually happens every year in settings where pigs and humans coexist, but the problem now is that one case occurred in a person who reported no contact with the animals or attendance at an agricultural fair.
- 10% of the reported variant flu virus infections in the country since 2010 have occurred in people who had no documented swine contact.
Investigations so far have found:
- The infection was caused by a different flu virus subtype (H1N2v) than the first 3 cases (H3N2v), and occurred in a person under 18, in Oregon – who wasn’t hospitalized and has already recovered.
- The infected person didn’t report having had contact with pigs or attending an agricultural fair within 10 days of onset of the illness, nor have any additional illnesses been found in the patient’s household contacts.
No person-to-person spread associated with the H1N2v virus has been confirmed with this person – or anyone else, for that matter.
