Tenderloin…plant!
Oct 21, 2022Ever tried a veggie meat dish by the name of "tenderloin" and "flank"? In Paris, you may: food like that is arriving at steakhouse menus in the city – and threatening government efforts to ban meat names for plant-based products.
- The global market for plant-based meat-like food has been booming. However, the French government, backed by farmers and the meat industry, has been trying to ban the use of meat names for non-meat foods in an effort to avoid confusing consumers.
So far, the court has suspended the ban – it says it gives operators too little time to adapt, but the Agriculture Ministry is already working on a new text taking into account the recommendations.
On another note, it remains unclear whether the ban would apply to imported products and to menus, or be limited to French labels.
